Day 77
So… I’m back. And after a final NYC night of (October!) snow and cold, arriving in 90-degree Port-au-Prince heat couldn’t come soon enough.
Had small talk with the adorable 87-year-old man sitting next to me on the plane. He asked if I was a missionary. It was too confusing to explain no in Kreyol, so I went with it. We both thanked “Jesu” for landing safely.
Setting up a mosquito net? Just...

Oh yes, we made a song. To help learn comparatives, set to the tune of “Frere Jacques.”
Day 76
Still glowing from last night’s party with my students. If I ever needed confirmation that quitting my job to come to Haiti was worth it, I found 43 eager, amazing reasons.
I think the mosquitoes are saying goodbye as well. As in, they are making their presence known on my ankles.
Went all out with Lyneda for my last Wednesday class today. I know I’m coming back in November, but it does feel...
Day 75
Discovered a new crowded, chaotic, outdoor market today. The funny thing is it didn’t feel crowded or chaotic at all, just normal. Hm.
Final Tuesday class was a blast. To study future predictions (will/ won’t) we did fortune telling and a Newlywed style quiz game. Here’s a future prediction: I will miss the hell out of these guys.
I had a house party for all my students after class. Music,...
Showed up at LMT Orphanage (one of our other work projects) and these cuties busted into their standard greeting: a song.
Day 74
Got to take a walk and visit some of the other projects EDV’s been doing. Like the insane cuteness happening and LMT, one of the orphanages we helped do construction work for.
On that note, why do no Haitian kids wear pants?
Gave a Cambridge certified exam to a group of students who were doing shockingly well. Turns out they did, well… shockingly well.
Having a farewell party of sorts for...
Day 73
French toast marathon. With experimental banana compote. My obsession with reductions continues.
You know all those shirts they make for the losing teams at the Superbowl and NCAA finals? Apparently they’re donated to Haiti.
Felt a breeze that reminded me: it’s fall.
As I mentioned earlier, we’ve been watching the Band of Brothers miniseries. Had a dream last night I was getting shot at and...
Day 72
Finally had the Saturday conversation class the students have been asking for for months. It’s incredible to me how many of them are eager to give up their Saturday to practice English.
The theme of the conversation class revolved around who they’d want to invite over for a dinner party. I’m proud to say that Jesus, Obama, Martelly, Nelson Mandella, Lil’ Wayne and yours truly made the final...
